Growing Our Children’s Garden

This week, Mr. Chris (my husband and soon-to-be part-time children’s music exploration guide) and I rolled up our sleeves to prepare the children’s garden at Beacon Food Forest.

Our garden is quickly becoming the heart of Sunflower Seedlings Preschool—a place where little hands dig, little minds grow, and big imaginations run wild. Before we can welcome the kids, though, this space needs a little extra TLC.

What We’ve Accomplished So Far
We started by tackling weeds, and with each scoop of soil and every tug of a root, the garden began transforming into the welcoming space we envisioned. I’ve also been sketching plans for the area: rows of child-friendly veggies, a cozy reading nook under the shade of a tree, and maybe even a mini sunflower field to match our preschool’s name. Slowly but surely, it’s all coming together.

What’s next?
Next on the list is developing a definitive border for our garden plot to keep things tidy and organized. We’ll also be creating defined pathways for little feet to wander and adding magical touches like a cozy reading nook under the shade of a tree, whimsical garden markers, and bug hotels. Each step brings us closer to creating a safe, nurturing space where children can explore, learn, and connect with nature.

Why a Garden?
A garden is so much more than a patch of dirt. It’s a living classroom brimming with lessons about patience, growth, and the interconnectedness of life. From discovering wiggling worms to watching flowers bloom or harvesting their first carrot, your child will find endless opportunities to learn, grow, and be inspired.

Stay Tuned!
We’re so excited to share this journey with you. The garden is just the beginning of what makes Sunflower Seedlings Preschool a special place for children. Check out our blog for updates, photos, and stories from the garden and more.

Here’s to creating a space where little hands, big dreams, and muddy boots come together to grow something beautiful. We can’t wait to welcome your family into the garden soon!
