How to Dress for Outdoor Preschool

Start with the base layer

A good base layer helps regulate your child’s body temperature and keeps them warm even when damp.

  • In cool weather, choose merino wool or synthetic materials (avoid cotton—it traps moisture).

  • In warmer months, lightweight moisture-wicking fabrics help keep little explorers cool and dry.

Warm middle Layer

Fleece jackets, wool sweaters, or insulated pullovers are perfect choices. These layers should be easy to move in and simple to take off if the sun decides to show up mid-morning.

Waterproof top layer

  • Waterproof (not water-resistant) jackets and bibs

  • Elastic cuffs and sealed seams to keep rain out

  • Gaiters

  • Rain mittens and boots with good tread for muddy play

Brands like Oaki, Jan & Jul, and REI Co-op hold up through puddle jumping, climbing, and sliding through wood chips.

Accessories

Little details make a big difference!

  • Wool socks (even in rain boots—they keep feet warm when wet) you should pack an extra pair just incase!

  • Waterproof mittens/gloves for cold or muddy play

  • Sun hats for warmer weather and beanies for cold weather

  • A neck gaiter instead of scarves—it’s safer and easier for preschoolers to manage

  • Front strap backpack like REI’s tarn brand is a great choice

  • Rain cover for backpack

Label everything

Outdoor preschool gear has a funny way of going on its own adventures. A permanent marker or fabric label on every item (including boots and mittens!) saves a lot of confusion at the end of the day.

Tip: keep a waterproof bag

We recommend keeping a labeled tote in your child’s cubby or backpack with:

  • Extra socks

  • Mittens

  • Undergarments

  • A dry outfit (because mud happens)
